Considerations for Designing a Bespoke Lampshade
- When choosing fabric to cover a lampshade, avoid fabric that is stretchy, transparent, or too thick. Light to medium weight fabrics like Cotton, Linen and Velvet work best to cover a lampshade.
- Think pattern, smaller patterned fabric work great on Empire Lampshades and larger patterned / geometric designs are perfect on Drum lampshades.
- The type of fabric you choose influences the translucence of the lampshade. If you would like light to pass through the lining and fabric of your lampshade so that it glows, choose a lighter cotton or linen fabric. If you would like an opaque lampshade with light only emanating from the open top and bottom of the lampshade, a velvet fabric minimises transmission of light.
Measurement Guide
Your shade height should be between approximately 30 and 40 percent of the overall height of the lamp base and shade combined.
If your lampshade is too tall it will look top heavy, but if too short it will look out of balance.
The lampshade width should be approximately twice the width of the lamp base. For a round base measure the diameter but for square base the widest measurement is diagonal from corner to corner and that is the measurement that should be used for the width ratio.
Also consider where your lampshade is going. In a tight space you may want to pick a narrower lampshade.
